Decision on ASDA & Kirkland planning applications

The ASDA planning application is due to go before our local councillors at Area Committee tomorrow:

         
Wednesday 27th February, Marple Cricket Club, Bowden Lane at 6.00pm

The doors will open at 5.00pm and as numbers are limited you are advised to get there early.

The Area Committee is requested by planning officers to recommend that the Planning and Highways Regulation Committee refuse planning permission.

Both ASDA and Kirkland applications will be referred to and decided by the Planning and Highways Regulation Committee on:

Friday 1st March - Venue: Stockport County Football Ground, Room TNT 2 Suite, Edgeley Park, Hardcastle Road, Edgely Stockport SK3 9DD  at 6.00pm

Doors open at 5.00pm and as numbers are limited to 210 people you are advised to get there early.

Manchester and Pennine Waterways Partnership Canal Project

The Canal & River Trust (CRT) is divided into several partnership advisory groups. Marple canals fall within the Manchester and Pennine Waterway Partnership led by Prof. Walter Menzies.

The Manchester and Pennine Waterway Partnership has commissioned a Client Based Project with students from Liverpool University. The group working on Marple, Bugsworth Basin and Whaley Bridge will be looking at "how can the canal and its associated infrastructure be developed to increase the value it brings to the local tourist offer of Marple, Buxworth and Whaley Bridge as visitor destinations?"

The Civic Society and Stockport Council were invited to meet the students to discuss potential opportunities for Marple Canals and the surrounding area. The following potential tourist/visitor opportunity areas were highlighted:

Marple Aqueduct,  Lime Kilns,  Roman Lakes/Mellor Mill heritage site,  Marple Wharf,  Goyt Mill, Marple Memorial Park. 

These areas are all part of the "Vision for Marple" prepared by Marple Civic Society in 2010.

Marple Wharf Urban Design Project

Since the meeting between Marple Civic Society (MCS) and Canal & River Trust (CRT) on 8th October 2012, CRT have invitied MCS to submit a community scheme for Marple Wharf.

Following on from the work carried out with Glass-House Community Led Design in 2012, MCS has now engaged in a Client Based Project for Marple Wharf with urban design postgraduates from The University of Manchester. 

Their brief is to work with the community to carefully develop sensitive and deliverable proposals for this important historical site.

This is the second time the Civic Society has been involved with a University of Manchester canal project.  The first was the "Vision for Marple - Regenerating Marple's Historic Canal".

Marple Wharf

The Society's aim is to submit a community based scheme to CRT by June of this year.

Repair Work to Toll House at Top Lock on the Peak Forest Canal

The Canal & River Trust report that recent repair works have been carried out to the Toll House at Top Lock on the Upper Peak Forest Canal. The repair works include: 

•  repairs to the stair case including stone wall repairs and timber handles
•  the entrance lobby had minor timber repairs
•  new fencing around the canal arm was also installed
•  some redecoration

The estimated cost of the repair works is £5,000

Revealing Oldknow's Legacy - funding granted to help unlock Marple's potential as a key visitor destination

Following a successful 1st round Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) application, Canal & River Trust and Mellor Archaeological Society have been granted £45,000 to develop a detailed business plan in preparation for the submission of the full HLF application for £1.3million this summer.

This ambitious project aims to transform Marple into a key visitor destination with major works centred on the Mellor Mill site at Roman Lakes, Marple Aqueduct and the Lime Kilns.

The bid to HLF to reveal Oldknow's legacy is part of a joint partnership between the Canal & River Trust, Mellor Archaeological Trust, Stockport Council, Marple Civic Society, Marple Locks Heritage Society and Marple Vision Partnership.

ASDA and Kirkland Update - Marple Area Committee Report 6th February 2013

Marple Area Committee met on 6th February 2013 to consider planning applications from ASDA/ CAMSFC for a supermarket on the Hibbert Lane campus of Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College and from Kirkland Developments for a foodstore on the site of Chadwick Street car park.

Reports from the council's planning department recommended that the ASDA/ CAMSFC application be refused planning permission and that the application by Kirkland Developments be granted planning permission.

In the event a decision the ASDA/ CAMSFC application was deferred until the next Marple Area Committee meeting on 27th February because information had been received from ASDA/ CAMSFC shortly before the Area Committee meeting and councillors had not had sufficient time to consider the content.

The Kirkland application was debated by councillors who unanimously recommended to Planning and Highways Committee to grant the application.

This means that a decision by councillors (recommendation to P & H) on the ASDA/ CAMSFC application will now take place on 27th February 2013 at 6-00pm at Marple Cricket and Squash Club, Bowden Lane.

Although members of the public will not be allowed to speak a good turnout will help let ASDA know what Marple thinks about their application.
